Capillary Matting

I tend to stand my pots in shallow trays and top the trays up with water.  What advantage would the use of capillary matting give me over this method?

    A more even distribution of moisture is the greatest advantage.  Used correctly, could save you water too.

    Also you can set up an irrigation system. Put a bucket of water alongside and make a capillary connection between the two, a strip of towel will be perfect. The water will be 'pulled' from the bucket  along the towel strip into the capillary matting.

    That would be useful for longer absences for sure.
