Cameillia sasanqua

The first of my sasanqua camellias has just come into bloom. It is supposed to be scented. Mmmmm. If you say so.
They seem to have enjoyed the hot summer. It seems slightly odd to have camellias in flower in the autumn but they are a lovely addition to the garden. Unfortunately, the white flowers have been somewhat battered by the wind and rain but I still enjoy them.

Sasanquas flower in the autumn into winter, japonicas flower in the winter into spring (exact timing depends on variety, of course). I otherwise can't tell the two types apart and rely on plant tags to know for sure. The unusual summer weather might have pushed up the bloom a bit.

I've never known a scented camellia, but they're worth having for the evergreen structure and fall or winter bloom when everything else is asleep.
  • Mine too, it's still tiny got it as a 9cm in late Spring but it grew several buds already.

Just noticed lots of buds on mine which is "Crimson King". I have endeavoured this last year to keep it well watered in order to keep the buds. The year before most of them either fell off or were knocked by the squirrels.

  • I have 4 sasanquas, name tags long lost. One is a single white, one a semi-double white, one is a semi-double pink, all chosen for scent, and the last one was given to me as a very sickly plant by a friend who was convinced I would nurse it back to health. She was right, that was 30 years ago. They are all growing in large containers and usually flower from Oct. until Dec.
The scent is rather musky, definitely not a sweet scent. I usually move the white ones into the conservatory when they are in flower as it is very wet and windy here in Cornwall in the autumn and the petals are so easily damaged. I had not noticed the buds so was surprised to see two flowers open yesterday.
I was tempted to buy some sasquanas after seeing some in flower during a visit to  Heligan Gardens.
