Mulberry tree dying?

We have a small, approx. 10ft high mulberry bush. I noticed one of the thicker branches was dying back so, using a pruning saw, I cut it back to the trunk. To my dismay I saw a large dark brown centre core in the branch. Is this the beginning of a death sentence for the tree? There are a few other branches also looking sickly.
The branch i cut off was about 3” thick and the tree is 15 years old.
