    Thanks all for your replies, appreciate them all. Why is it best not to plant grasses when dormant? I always thought that was the best time to plant most things. Roses, shrubs etc.

    Grasses need to be divided or planted out when the soil is warming up. They are very unhappy in cold damp soil and the important small roots just die. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Thanks @Dovefromabove. Perhaps I'll wait until March to order then. I manage to kill enough plants as it is.
