Share your favourite Dahlias

I’m going to buy some new tubers next year as I don’t love the ones I’ve bought. Feel free to share your favourites 🌸

Islander: stunning flowers but just doesn’t produce that many flowers and stems seem to become very weak for no reason.

Thomss Edison: lots of blooms but not quite dinner plant size flowers

Hi @Dinnerplatedahlias🌸 I planted 2 Cafe au Lait tubers this year and they have produced massive blooms since July and are still going strong, definitely my favourite dahlia although I’ve not got much dahlia experience.  When I dig up the tubers I’m going to have a go at splitting them to get more plants next year, I can’t stop looking at them they’re so beautiful 🌸

  • My garden is really too windy and often too wet for dinner plate dahlias. I usually look for blooms of 15cm or less and occasionally a 20cm just for variety, but they need individual stakes, which rather spoils the effect.
However this spring in the greenhouse I found a stray tuber of Kiev which had somehow missed my self-imposed limits because it never flowered and  I  have been nursing it back to health all summer, just because of the name. It had one gorgeous flower that lasted ages and now has another just opening. Next year it should be strong enough to move further back in the border, with its own stake!

I like the single ones because they still have their reproductive bits so they attract Insects. Verones Obsidian, AKA Honka Black, is as close to black as I have seen.
    But they are all beautiful.

I really love the look of Cafe Au Lait but heard they can take ages to flower 🤔

Hi @Dinnerplatedahlias🌸 perhaps I had beginners luck this year but they’ve flowered really well since mid July, about a week later than some of the others.  I really hope they perform as well next year and it wasn’t beginners luck 🙏

Lover the dinner plates, but find it tricky to arrange them nicely in a vase!
