125sqm Allotment Plot

Hi everyone,

I was offered and accepted a 125sqm allotment plot, I'm told this is a half plot. Our allotment doesn't have full plots anymore as when they came available they made them into half plots so to give chance for everyone to have a plot.

My question is, are half plots big enough? When i went to view the plot at the weekend I was trying to envisage what I could do but with the plot being complete bare I'm struggling!

    Big enough for what? Have you decided what you want to grow? On the plus side if it was completely bare that is a real bonus, many people have to tackle overgrowth weed-infested nightmares.

    to have a nice variety of veg etc I guess!

    I think I was expecting a larger plot but these are the biggest they can offer :-:smile: 

    There's 4 big beds already which have weeds in but I think I will start over with the beds and make more smaller ones otherwise I can't see how the previous owners got to the centre of the beds without treading on the soil.

    I was just wondering whether it's still a decent size plot to make it worthwhile having x

    I guess it depends on what you mean by worthwhile? If you're after self sufficiency then no, saving money? again unlikely but a half plot can provide you with fruit n veg of a quality that's hard to beat. One thing to factor is how far you have to travel to your plot and the amount of free time you have.
    I have an allotment because I enjoy the process of producing fruit n veg rather than if it's worthwhile in terms of yield and cost.

    Thank you for replying, I enjoy growing fruit, veg and flowers at home in my garden and wanted somewhere I could go to meet others so I guess that answers my own question.

    I'm lucky that the allotment is at the bottom of our estate and I only work part time too so I should be able to get there quite often.

    If it's somewhere to go to socialise and just do some pottering about on your plot it may be easier to go for stuff that's easily maintenance.
    Fruits like raspberries, blackberries and blackcurrants look after themselves for most of the year but will need protection from birds - although mine are left with no protection-  just a few CD's spinning in the wind and they're completely left alone.
    Rhubarb is easy in a sunny spot.
    Runner beans and dwarf French beans are easy and prolific.
    There's lots you can grow without it becoming a chore, leaving you plenty of time to socialise :)

    I enjoy growing veg and flowers so it’s nice to have a space away from home to have a break away

    A half plot is a useful size. Many sites are doing what yours is. The only limitations are the space you have to rotate crops. If you want to grow traditional crops like potatoes and brassicas,  (both of which take up a lot of space) some brassicas also tie up the ground for a long time.  More and more people are using raised beds, and no dig methods, these methods help overcome the problems of  rotation.  It all depends on what you want to grow,  and what methods you use.
