When should I start feeding the birds again?

I feed a mixed seed mix and sunflower hearts all year and from about October add peanuts and fat balls.  I buy one large bag of peanuts in the autumn and when it's run out in about April, I don't buy another one until the next autumn.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • Since I began feeding the birds all year round the local bird population has increased in both numbers and variety. I couldn't stop now, even if I wanted to, because though we are surrounded by farmland, it is just grazing and doesn't offer much by way of the differing foods they need. They disappear for while  sometimes, after berries or insects, but always come back and there is always someone on the feeders. The pheasants and corvids peck alongside the ducks on the yard, while the robin nags for mealworms :)
My cat often sits at the bottom of the pole, but the birds still come to the feeders. They know he isn't interested in them, he is hoping to see the rat that lives under the terrace!
