Plant or wait until spring, advice needed

Hi everyone. I got a load of plants today from an anti waste site and don’t know whether to plant them now or keep in the pots they came in… here is a list:

clematis “mme le coultre”
rubbecia ophelia
fern “fougere hour”, holly?
Leucanthemum

the other things I got are fine (sedums, pansies, lavender), I’m ok about, but just wnobering the best strategies for the ones I listed.

Real bargain over 100 euros of plants and I paid 20 euro. 😀

    What size are they?

  • Not seeing sizes on the pots, except the clematis which says 1.5litre, the two in the photo together are probably double? And the fern bigger again.

They look big enough to plant out. Keep an eye out for slugs in the spring, especially the clematis. Well done you!

I'd plant the Clematis, Rudbeckia and Leucanthemum,
I'm not sure how hardy the Holly Fern is, I haven't seen them much in gardens

They will probably be nursery surplus.  So possibly too long in the same pot.  Give them a very good water and spead the roots out when you plant.

location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

  • Thanks. Yes I was quite pleased with my bargain. I was expecting more pansies etc (often the mixed basket is full of smaller stuff), I was quite happy to get these good sized plants. I will probably give away the lavender as it is HUGE and will definitely not be happy in a pot, (but my sons godmother has a perfect spot for it in my “adopted” garden 🤪.

nutcutlet, the fern says it’s hardy and I’m in Paris so my climate is generally mild anyway.

  • Thanks for the advice babe, they are from my local garden center, definitely left overs from this season’s stock, I did buy a good general purpose fertilizer while I was there as it never goes wrong, especially as I work in pots and planters so always need to add goodness to the soil.
