Screwpine in patio??

Hi everyone,

I have two of these in my patio and one in the soil in my front garden (which is now looking very big and healthy!). Assume planted by birds/wind. I am a kind of leave it and see type of gardener … but I am curious to know what these might be, Google says screwpine but that looks like a massive tropical tree!? I am in Bristol.

Thank you.

    Hello Elizabeth,
You are right, it is something dropped from a bird feeder. I can't for the life of me remember the name, but it's best to get it out as soon as you can. It has extremely tough roots.
Someone on here will know the proper name , it might be a type of millet.

Pandanus utilis - screwpine - is not hardy below below 10C so I very much doubt that is what you have.

I think you need @Silver surfer on the case or maybe @nutcutlet who are both very good at identifying plants.

  • Let's hope it isn't Carex pendula.

That was my thought @BobTheGardener, quite likely, I've got it here as well.

  • Is scared pendula very bad?
  • Carex 😂
  • I find the stacked (pineapple) leaves very interesting but will get rid of it of course if need be.
