Beech Hedge dying/ turning brown

Our mature beech hedge of over 40 years is turning brown. The same thing happened last year, then it recovered in the spring. Any ideas on what might be happening?

Yes.  I call it unofficially beech mite.  It's like Greenhouse Red Spider but outdoors.   Look at the underside of the leaf with a magifying glass.

You will lose your leaves during the winter, which is a shame.

See another thread "Beech Mite" or something similar.
