Mine is within 1 foot of the wall & surrounded by slate covered soil. It doesn’t sound like ideal conditions but it absolutely thrives & the heatwaves we had this year didn’t affect it at all. I grew one in a previous garden & that also thrived. I reckon they’re tough as old boots. P.S. Both grown on west facing walls.
It would be good to grow it a bit away from the wall so it has access to more rain and can grow back as well as up and forward. The great advantage over pyracantha is that it doesn't have thorns, is easier to shape, if you want to.
I bought a C.Lacetus around April this year for £9.99 at a local GC. It was about 1m high when bought and has grown quite a bit already, but there are just a few stems atm.

Thanks all. I couldn't find Lacetus in the GCs near me, so I went with C. Rothschildianus instead. Low maintenance, but I should stop it rubbing against the wall in the wind. Says it can be 5m tall, so I'll keep it relatively flat against the wall. I like that the bar stem means the neighbours kids can still play on the stepping logs
