Post heatwave unhappy Weigela

hi - my weigela Florida has really suffered in the heatwave earlier this year, I’d hoped it would have recovered by now but although it’s producing healthy new leaves they then they go brown and shrivel- so the whole plant is quite brown looking: it’s getting lots of water but not sure whether I should prune it fairly hard back and hope it picks up for next year. Any ideas welcomed? Thanks

Not sure if you live in the north or south still not alot of rain here in the Midlands. Soil may appear wet after rain but it is only on the surface. I would leave well alone start again in the spring let it flower and then prune. If you cut anything off now you risk next years flowers. If your shrub is old and you have not pruned it before best to prune lightly yearly until you get what you want.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

An alternative approach to pruning (for older, mature shrubs) is to take out about a third of the oldest thickest branches right out down to the base each year after it's done flowering. It keeps an open structure and avoids the clipped blob look.
