@rosie4cheeks Yes I agree best to find out when it flowers so that you know when to prune. Plenty of advice here. Welcome!

  • Thanks Silver surfer and GardenerSuze, great suggestions - my neighbour thinks it's a weed but it's helping my jasmine climb up the wall so it's a bonus to me!

@rosie4cheeks If you don't prune it  you can get like a bird's nest effect with dead growth at the bottom and all the green leaves and flowers at the top. If it is newly planted it is putting down roots rather than flowering. It does look close to the wall and your Jasmine could bully it out, depending on which variety it is. Clematis like flowers in the sun with a cool root run and lots of water. I think all you can do is wait for flowers and then post a photo for some more help. Good Luck.

Yes, I'd agree with clematis. If it's the native, Clematis vitalba,  you may not want to keep it.
  • Thanks for the sound advice @GardenerSuze - I've inherited the plant from the previous homeowner and yes it's growing close to the wall and also from a spot in front of the border for some reason! Really interested to see if it does flower, the Jasmine next to it is an Inverleith Jasmine which seems to be happy so far...

Did you plant it? How long has it been there? Has it flowered? If it seeded itself then it is most likely the wild one so probably best to dig it up.

I had no idea there was a wild one @rosie4cheeks just so that you know.

Looked it up it also known as Traveller's Joy which I have heard of, guess it travels around but not to me. If you live in the south of the country more likely to be the wild one maybe.

I had loads of Traveller's Joy in my old garden in France, kept popping up, pain in the neck, had tough roots to get out.
