What to do now with Digitalis and Thalictrum seedlings sown last month?

AcuwellAcuwell Posts: 87
Hi, I read somewhere (can't find it now!) that it was ok to sow Foxgloves and Thalictrum seeds in Autumn for stronger plants next year (see pic for their current size).  These are currently in my unheated solar potting shed so get plenty of light and frost protection.  I am new to growing seeds so wonder what to do with them now?  Do I need to pot them up/overwinter them in the potting shed or outside, or can they be planted outside (seem too small for that?)  Or anything else I should be doing.  I don't have a Cold Frame unfortunately.  Many thanks

Those will be too small to plant out this year and at the moment are too small to pot into larger pots.

Can you leave them where they are until spring?
They won't grow much now until spring arrives.
When they get a bit bigger (about 2") you can pot them on and when they're bigger they can be moved outside somewhere bright but sheltered next Spring

Hi Pete, yes I can definitely leave them in my potting shed if that is the best way forward - and then pot on and move outside next spring.  I had thought they were sowed early to plant out before Winter but never mind hopefully I will have lots of new plants with healthy roots in spring.

I usually sow digitalis about July and by Oct they're big enough to be planted in the garden.
Thalictrum self-seeds in my garden, so I leave them to it.

Hi Pete thanks, I will try to sow them earlier next year.  Do you think mine will flower next Spring?  I'll look out for baby Thalictrum!!

I'm not sure, they're quite small atm but they may do.
When I plant mine out in late autumn they're usually in 1L pots.
If I wait until spring, they'll be in 2L pots by then.

PS - once you've got them in your garden if you let the seed drop you'll have thousands of seedlings by summer - you can then use those seedlings for your plants the following year.
I only sow seeds if I want all white ones as dropped seed will be a mix of colours.
