Acanthus removal

From looking online it seems removing an acanthus might be near impossible… I want to take mine out and replant some nice hydrangea annabelle in the same spot. Does anyone have any tips for total removal or am I stuck with it for life?

every bit of root you leave in the ground will regrow.
I have Annabelle, but I'm not that happy with it. The flower heads are too heavy and they always flop.

Dig up as much as you can.  Keep an eye on regrowth, then just hoe it or dig it out continually.  Under the shade of a plant like "Annabelle" it will grow but notvery fast.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

The seedlings are easy enough to get out. You just need to be vigilant - for a long time.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Fork out as much as you can. Paint the regrowth with glyphosate gel.
  • Thanks all! I’m going to have a go at it then and just prepare to be doing it constantly, I bought the annabelle strong so hopefully they won’t flop too much!
