What could this be?

Hello, can anyone identify this plant for me? I recently dug up a Spirea Japonica and this plant had suddenly popped up.

  • Thank @Dovefromabove , how strange, I certainly haven't planted a rose there. I have a climbing rose but the main stem is quite a distance away, could it be a sucker?
  • Suckers aren’t usually reddish in my experience. Possibly a rambler … but maybe @Nollie or @Marlorena can help … they have more rose knowledge than I have.

It’s not a sucker, as in a shoot from the hardy Laxa rootstock that pretty much all rose varieties sold in the UK and EU are grafted onto, that would be light green in colour and look very different to what you’ve got.

It’s possible that your climbing rose has ‘suckered on it’s own roots’ which is a different thing entirely - this means that the climbing rose has sent out a shoot underground from the top part of your rose then popped up some distance away. This can only happen if the graft (the knobbly bit that joins the rootstock to your chosen climbing rose) is buried beneath the soil. If you can see above ground said knobbly bit on your climbing rose this is unlikely. Only certain roses are prone to suckering on their own roots like that so it depends what you have.

Alternatively, there was a rose planted there years ago by a previous owner and removing your Spirea has meant it has opportunistically popped up again. I would let it grow to see what turns up but if you want to get rid you may just have to dig deeper 😊

@Dovefromabove just to let you know, Marlorena is taking a break from the forum at the moment so may not respond to being tagged.

  • Thanks again @Dovefromabove I've recently dug a large hole (just out of picture) for a new rose so I think I'll dig it up, put it in a large pot and hope it survives
  • Thanks @Nollie … understood. We’re away from home at the moment and only popping onto the forum occasionally so probably missing some bits of news. 😊

Thanks @Nollie , thats interesting. I did plant the graft of my climbing rose below ground, so I think you are correct in it being a sucker from the roots. Think I'll dig it up.
