Pineapple lily (Eucomis) not flowering

I have had a pot of pineapple lilies for some years now, and they have never not flowered, until now. 1 flower from 4 bulbs.

Do you think it may be because of the hot weather we had this year, or maybe not enough watering through the summer?  I repotted them 2 years ago, after leaving them for maybe 6 years untouched ( because they were doing fine), so I'm not sure if the compost was too rich and the leaves have grown, at the expense of the flowers (although the leaves don't seem any larger than in previous years)?

  • Have you been feeding them? I give ours a liquid feed from Spring to Autumn, especially if they are in pots, plus regular watering. I also cut the flower heads off, as soon as they go to seed. Yours might also benefit from being put into a larger pot.

The hot weather would not have been a problem, as long as you were watering regularly.
  • I've never fed them, I have to say I've always left them to their own devices, and they've always been really good.

They weren't watered much over the summer as I was away for 7 weeks and left my daughter in charge of the garden. She didn't really water the plants that were visible, let alone the ones she couldn't see!
  • We have them growing near our pond and this year more than ever with flowering. Lovely plant.  Can you plant them out? Maybe they just need more space.
