Hi all! I am new to gardening and looking for some advice regarding a Flamingo tree I purchased online a few days ago. The tree is looking a little sad as you can see in the photo. I was planning on planting it in the garden this weekend once the high winds have passed but I’m wondering if I would be better off potting for the winter to give it some time to become stronger before planting next spring? I welcome any advice on what would work best. Thanks in advance!

  • @laurat22 Have you tried tipping it out of the pot to check the roots? Wonder if it is in a small pot for transportation. I have never planted one myself but this could be the place to start. Welcome! Hopefully someone will be able to help more.
I do know they like a damp soil as the are Willow related.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

I don't really think they are suited to being grown in pots.  Willows require a lot of water, and it will generally do better in the ground.  Make sure you leave enough space between the trunk and surrounding walls or fences to allow for growth of the head.  We have one which I trim back to about 3 feet in diameter each spring and it grows to at least 6 feet across be the end of the season.
