That Delbard rose looks quite sweet, and very suitable for a pot I gather.. interesting new addition to their range.. I've long had my eyes on another Delbard called 'Amelie Nothomb' which I saw at Peter Beales, and was rather impressed..
Kordes Roses have been around a long time, we don't get that many over here but they have long held a reputation for quick to establish, floriferous roses, very suitable for those new to roses, unlike Austins, which can take getting to know.. Kordes also have another reputation, that is, their roses are noted for being rather coarse, thorny and lacking in grace... upright bushes, stiff and not easy to touch..
There was a time I felt I could look at a rose without a name, and take a pretty good guess it was a Kordes.. however this doesn't detract from their garden merits, and one that fits this general theme is 'Golden Beauty', which is usually known as 'South Africa' overseas..
Very much in the top rank of yellow floribunda roses, right up there with the best I've had in the last 10 years, totally healthy dark glossy foliage, it never saw black spot in my garden.. the large fully double blooms are rich butter yellow, opening more orange and fading to creamy yellow, yet in the late evening light, they turn amber and really glow from a distance.. It has some scent, I can't say what of, fruity? musky? but I found it pleasant.. Plenty of thorns, and the smaller ones reach right up to just under the bloom which makes holding the stem tricky without gloves..
Anyone who is into Kordes roses in particular, I think this is a 'must have'..
..late September and still not a blemish on the leaves.. it also stands up to heavy rain..
.. late summer evening, the blooms turn this rich amber colour.. quite striking when seen from afar.. and this on a first season plant..
@Marlorena - that Kordes looks fantastic. Lovely photos and I love that change of colour to amber. How would you rate it against Ab Fab?
I couldn’t agree more about Kordes’. They have the most incredible disease resistance and flower in such great numbers. They do lack scent and like you say they don’t have the grace of roses like Austins.
If you asked me in the middle of this summer after the first flush on my LF Kordes which threw out well over 100 blooms I would have said they were my favourite breed. Now after collecting photos of all my roses over the summer the Austins have grown on me a lot. Although I want some more Kordes’ in my garden I’ve definitely changed to an Austin fan.
@Alfie_ .. yeah, you wouldn't want two strong yellows in a small garden, you'd want to keep them far apart, so if your area is smallish then one or the other I would suggest..
.. but it competes with Ab Fab and is on the same level, but appears a much smaller manageable shrub.. upright, compact and less wide spreading, not aggressive, which Ab Fab can be or was in my garden..
Incidentally, two of the very best yellows I've had are 'The Poet's Wife' and 'The Country Parson', both Austins.. they marginally had more continuous blooming than the non-Austins, and arguably better scent [citrus/lemon].. Ab Fab took 2 weeks off at one point, and GB isn't quite continuous. The 2 Austins were never without blooms, but The PW was a large gangly plant for me, that needed staking, and The CP is so excessively prickly that I regard it as more for specialists, it's too thorny to handle..
Kordes do have an unusually graceful Austin like rose sold here in UK, it's called 'The Wren' and sold by Beales.. it's a beauty, graceful and not too thorny, also very small, suitable for pots.. the blooms are beautiful and scented.. I'll post some pics another time..
In a day or two, I'll highlight 'Bathsheba'.. see what you think of that one..
Beales 20% off code BF22 .. I'm trying to resist..
Also, just to add, DA discount GARDEN also applies to their potted roses.. I had thought it was bare roots only, but I've just tried it and it works for potted too..
..this is 'The Wren'.. [Kordes 2003, aka Sangerhausen Jubilee rose].. ..showing the many colour variations.. makes a small shrub continuously in bloom with a nice fragrance.. I don't have a full bush shot of this rose unfortunately..
