Old seed or new

Hi

I grew some Nicotiana plants from seed this year and they've done brilliantly. Definitely going to sew more next year. But I have two choices...

1) Sew the seed left over in the packet from this year.

2) Sew seed the plants have produced.

Also, if I go for option 2 would seed from for example a white flowering plant come true next year? I had white pink and purple this time and it would be good to know what colour the flowers will be when I plant them out.

Thanks in advance.

If they were F1 hybrids they will not come true from seed. If you have kept the rest of the packet dry, I would use those.   You could hedge your bets and sow a bit of each.
  • These ones weren't F1 so would they likely come true from seed?

I think hedging my bets is a good idea. From what I recall they germinated really easily. Especially compared to the gazanias I sowed grrrrr
  • I collect flower seeds and keep them for sowing the next year. No idea if any of them are F1 as I have been doing this for so long. Get a good return every year.
