Penstemon leaf - fungus?

I bought 2 small penstemon plants a few weeks ago and there were a few brown spots on their leaves. I was not too concerned, thinking they had been caused by the heat. However, the spots have since spread all over the plants and they look more purple-brown. Is this some sort of fungus and would fungus spray work on it?
I have some other penstemons in the garden and am worried that it might spread to these plants. I'd rather get rid of the 2 new plants now if this is some nasty disease.
Thank you.

    Which variety are they?
I remembered a similar question about spots on Penstemon "Raven", and actually managed to find it.  I thought it was last year but turns out it was 3 years ago 😳.
Don't know if it's of any help.

  • Thanks for that, @AnniD. They are Phoenix red/white.
I had a look under the leaves after reading your post but could not see anything, but a few holes have now appeared where some spots were and it looks like something has taken a big bite out of a couple of leaves. So I guess your theory might be correct, just that I haven't caught the critters in action. Have given the leaves a spray, hoping that would help.
Think I will stick to the narrow-leaf penstemons in future; they seem less problematic.
