Great video thanks - lots of useful info. I like their idea of sharpening to the bulb planter with an angle grinder 😂.

This is a great video. Arundel castle sounds awesome with 80,000 odd tulips.

Can anyone help me with a tulip collection I bought that came with no instructions:

I’m guessing you plant the tulips sparsely deep then the muscari more dense but higher up? What confuses me is that Finola is a late double tulip but this grape hyacinth is March-April. I would have thought they don’t overlap much.

The collection is a ratio of 25 grape hyacinth to 10 Finola.

  • I wouldn't plant the grape hyacinths at all - they'll spread, and you'll never be rid of them!  They also have very long-lasting foliage. which just looks untidy most of the time.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Maybe in pots? The do have a bad reputation for spreading....

Thanks guys. I ordered them for my small dahlia border for when I’ve dug them up so may just still put them in there and make sure I dig them up before putting the dahlias back out next year. Think it was an impulse buy as that collection looked really nice. I might email them as they sent no instructions and I don’t see how their flowering times can overlap much.

The two may both flower in May

The recent videos I posted suggest (from experts) that the bulb planting depth doesn't affect their blooming time. Their internal chemistry defines when the bloom, whether planted shallow or deep. (I'll experiment with this this year).

I wouldn't, personally, spread the tulips out too much they might look atomised (they don't really "bulk up"). Plant all the bulbs in a random mix, without pattern, fairly close. Add a lot of grit to the soil to try and prevent the bulbs rotting.

I would see this year as a first experiment and not worry too much.
