Moving a Eucalyptus gunnii

Hello
I’m overhauling a garden in Sussex and considering moving this eucalyptus. It’s around 6 ft (ish). Step ladder for height reference! Any advice on whether it’s okay to do it at this time of year, whether it’s even a good idea at all and the chances of survival gratefully received. Thanks a million.

  • @ahannahlane I wondered where you are thinking of moving it too. They are notorious for doing structural damage if not keep in check.

  • Hi @GardenerSuze. Thanks for getting in touch.
It’ll be in a fairly open space away from any buildings.
  • Hi @ahannahlane,

If it was mine I would cut all branches down to about 12", and then dig it up and move it getting as much root ball as possible.
They do get large, but if they are regularly coppiced they can be lovely.

  • Hi @Bee witched Thank you. That sounds like a great idea. And coppicing for sure. I’m working on this garden and trying to encourage the owners to do just that with a few trees. Cheers!
  • @ahannahlane Good luck from a fellow Gardener.

I agree with @Bee witched. Cut it back and prep the new spot well before lifting it. This time of year should be fine.
They do grow very quickly, so coppicing is far better than just letting it grow huge, even if you have the room. You get the best colour on new foliage too  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Hi @Fairygirl Thank you.  :):)
