Acacia dealbata X alpina

Can anyone tell me why my acacia has what looks like the start of flower spears appearing in September but they don't open into flowers in the winter.

What temperature regime does youe plant enjoy?  Sometimes a plant can be tricked by a temperature change into making growth at the wrong time.

Many spring flowwering plants make the buds in autumn and carry these through the winter.

  • Hi Bede, I think probably that is what has been happening. The Acacia x Alpina is a more hardy variety than the regular dealbata but we have been having some mild autumns, but I dont understand why it is setting buds so early and then they dont open into flower, could the birds be nibbling them do you think. It should flower in February.

A pity that you have had only my replies.  Perhaps your heading was too offputting.  I would suggest a more dumbed down title,  I suggest that you change the title (if you can) to: " Why is my mimosa budding too early"  .  If not, repeat.

My experience of mimosa is only the South of France, where mimosas can be affected by frost.  The word " hardy" can be applied to leaf, stem, bud and flower, all seperately.
