Why is my earth a green colour?

edited September 2022 in Problem solving
Morning all. I’ve sown grass seed recently and it’s coming on nicely. I have noticed though that the earth is green. Is this a drainage issue?. If so how can I prevent it, assuming it’s undesirable.

The earth isn't green it's algae on top and you're right re the drainage issue.

Undesirable?  It's up to you to decide.  What is the lawn used for?

I kill moss and algae by watering a solution of 6 dessertspoons of Sulphate of Iron (ferrous sulphate) in a 1.5 gallon watering can.  When it is dead, rake it up.  I have never tried it on young grass.

The drainage issue should be dealt with as well.  At least local spiking, perhaps more.

  • Now I normally go over the lawn with my spikey shoes, but I haven’t this year. So aeration is the key to manage it?

Your soil is obviously waterlogged and as said above algae is growing in the surface.
Over time your soil will go sour if it remains in that condition and not much will grow there.
You could try the test below to see how bad it is, but it's obviously quite bad from the photo.

Spiky shoes won't do the trick.  You need a good strong garden fork.

Stand on it to sink the tines as deep as they'll go and then wiggle back and forth to open up the holes.  Repeat every few inches working backwards over you soil so you don't compact new holes.   Leave it all alone for a week or two - keep off the grass - and see if the water drains.

If it does you can pile on sharp sand (not builders') and then brush it across and into all those holes so they stay open and allow air to get to the roots and water to drain.   repeat the aeration and sand every spring and autumn toll the lawn stops flooding.

If the water doesn't drain away you have a serious drainage problem which needs a serious solution or you could abandon the lawn and create a bog garden.
