Hi 🙋‍♀️ I’ve been given a potted wisteria by my daughter which was left in the garden by the previous house owner. It’s about 4 foot high (including the tub) and 3ft wide and has grown into a T shape. I intend to plant this next to my pergola hopefully so
it covers it one day.Has anyone any advice please, firstly about what I should put in the hole to help it establish and also the best way to fix it to the pergola leg bearing in mind it’s grown in a T shape? Should I try to bend it up so it grows up the leg and then hold it in place with ties ? Thank you

You will need a HUGE pergola. Wisteria have no trouble covering a house. Are you sure that's the right place?

I’m hoping to keep it in check by regular pruning 🤞 To be honest there is no where else for it to go and it’s a bit sickly looking so needs to go somewhere 🤦‍♀️☺️ Would it be possible to keep it in a huge pot by the side of the pergola leg in the hope it restrains it a bit?

I don't know. You will have to hope someone wiser than I comes along for that one. Good luck.

The pergola needs to be strong. I have had an Agriframes one for 30 years, nephews used it as a climbing frame, it now has roses, honeysuckle and a wisteria on its own roots on it.  Its a better place for the wisteria than  the parent next to the garage where  it attempts to get in it, over it , and through the hedge next door. As you have to prune it regularly for it to flower, thats not a problem.  Just don't buy one of those flimsy pergolas from the supermarkets or the DIY sheds, they won't last a year.  You can't see the frame here , but this was May, and June 5th Last year
  • Great is absolutely beautiful! The pergola has 4” x 4” legs which will be further strengthened so hopefully that might suffice if I keep it pruned well. Thank you. Unbelievably stunning 👍
