Monty's under tree planting

Hi,
Did anyone catch the name of that plant which Monty said had successfully survived under his trees during the extreme hot weather / dryness we had this past year and which he was subsequently dividing to spread elsewhere?
I believe it had small yellow flowers when in bloom and was about halfway(?) through Fridays (Episode 26 -- 16/09/22) edition of GW.
I watched it again on iplayer, going back over that section twice and still couldn't catch it, plus this was one they didn't appear to put the name of up on screen for viewers.
Many thanks,
Mike.

    Epimedium
    East Anglia
  • We have some planted immediately by the trunk of an Elder tree, and although they look a bit more frazzled than his (we are in the South East/Oven), I can testify that they are doing well, despite the competition with the tree for moisture.
  • Thanks, I have a shady area under some trees, so I have just ordered some.
    Best wishes,
    Mike.
  • @jagnut66f2labqBp I love Epimediums the old leaves and stems are cut back in early spring to reveal the fresh flowers and new leaves. If you leave it too late it becomes a fiddley job as you don't want to cut off the new flowers.
I have avoided the ones from Japan as they never do so well.

My favourites include E Domino, E Spine tingler and E Orange Queen.
This year some of them have suffered where they have ventured out into a sunnier spot.
Leaf scorch has been a problem. They are easy to grow, flower early and many have leaves that have lovely red tones in Autumn. Good in dry shade.
You will need to get close to appreciate their amazing flowers.

I love Epimediums and used to grow many different sp and cultivars.
Now just have a small garden.

Be very careful. Many of the new slow cultivars, will die if you do this.

I have never pruned my Epimedium Spine Tingler.
While many others I would prune back the old tatty before the flowers open.

    Perthshire. SCOTLAND .
  • That is good advice regarding some of the newer cultivars they can be very slow. The three I have mentioned all do well in my garden.
I do cut back the leaves on E Spine Tingler but I can completely understand the caution especially with a new plant.
