Prune apple tree - now?

Evening all,

At work, the apple trees make it really annoying to cut the grass, they've never been pruned and the lower branches are on the floor.

Is it ok to prune these off now and lift the canopy, or will the tree suffer?

  • Not an ideal photo, but I'm not currently at work! This if from late last year, but as you can imagine, with more leaves......

I have dug the grass away about 1m diameter from the trunk, so I'm not mowing to the trunk

  • Prune in July- August to reduce size. Prune in Jan. to maintain shape and overcrowding.
If your reshaping of the trees means removing thick branches, spread the pruning over 2-3 years to avoid shocking the tree too much. Heavy pruning is inclined to kick start trees into producing lots of new growth to compensate for that removed.
  • Ok, I'll wait till winter now. Cheers
