Overwintering lemon verbena

From what I understand, LV is not hardy.  It's in a very large pot. Can I keep it in the house away from the radiators or would an unheated porch be better? Space in the porch will be at a premium!

I had one in a 5L pot for many years.
In winter I'd just hide it somewhere out of the way behind a shrub somewhere sheltered.
It was always late coming into leaf- around May I think, but it didn't suffer being outdoors over winter, and I imagine it would also be a little warmer where you are too.

I have friends that over-winter them outside in a shelted spot and they seem fine.

We have one by the south facing back door that we just leave and it is fine.  But then we are in a fairly warm part of the country and last winter was mild.

That's great. I'll leave it outside then. I'll take a few cuttings as back up

  • @B3 Do you drink Lemon Verbena tea? Thought I might give it a go next year?

I had one in a sheltered spot near the kitchen door. I always thought it had died because it was so late to come into leaf.

Mine is outside - I cut the branches during the summer months, dry them and use them in a tisane during winter.  I don't fleece it.  It comes back every spring.  We have frosts here.  One frost is enough to demolish the plant - but it seems to come back every spring.

A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

An unheated porch will be fine in London.  I keep mine in a cold greenhouse for the winter and never lost one yet.

@GardenerSuze, I only have hot drinks if I have a cold and drink something cold afterwards - weird, I know😲 I haven't cooked with it yet either. It's been mainly for brushing past and crush and sniff😊

  • I've only had one for slightly over a year and it's also in a large pot. Last winter, it stayed outdoors, facing east, sheltered by the planter box, and was fine. I'm in the midlands.
