Which climbing rose to choose

Wondering if people would be able to recommend a climbing roses variety for me to buy...? I'm going round in circles on the Internet!

Two to be planted in the ground (not a pot), front garden, south-facing with quite a bit of sunshine all day in summer, to climb up trellis attached to a wall either side of our front door so ideally to grow to a medium size (not too small, ideally around 6ft, but also not huge/rambling). I prefer big/round blooms and I'm very new to gardening so if it can be disease-resistent and fairly straightforward to train/look after that would help.

Colour wise, we're not keen on pink. But happy with cream, white, purple or pale yellow.

Many thanks in advance!

Morning. I've been on that merry-go-round as well this week, also have specific needs. I found Terry White Roses very useful. And a lot cheaper than David Austin and Sarah Raven!
Edit: but I always look at David Austin cos they have the best info and advice 😉

  • I have 'Gardeners Glory' 0n a south facing wall. It pleases me because the yellow has no trace of orange. The flowers are exquisite at every stage - it is darkest on opening, then gradually fades through pale lemon to creamy white. My sense of smell is awol, but my daughter says it is scented. The petals fall cleanly and it has not suffered unduly from blackspot. It is easy to tie in and if deadheaded flowers willingly all summer in a challenging position. It never seems to get a mention, but I think it is a great rose, just about within your height limits at 1.5 to 2.5m.

Cl. Arthur Bell is a fabulous, easy to grow yellow (there is a shrub version  and a climbing version).

If you only want it to reach 6ft you could use some of the taller Austin shrub roses. I have Crocus rose which I have trained  round a pillar.

Have a look at The Pilgrim - yellow - and then Tess of the D'Urbevilles and Falstaff - deep red.   All 3 are short climbing DA roses that get to about 6' and are perfumed, repeat flowerers.   If you can cope with richer yelows, Teasing Georgia is gorgeous and has great perfume.

As has been said, peruse the DA site for info - size, colour, perfume, how to plant - and good pics then buy locally so you can choose the best looking one on display.

I have Tess of the d’Uberville, is wonderful but be aware that is utterly thorny, maybe if it’s a spot where you have to go often in and out you may prefer a rose with less thorns
  • Thanks so much everyone for all of your advice!! Really appreciated! Will have a look at what everyone has suggested.

My favourite rose is Rosa Banksii lutea which needs a south wall.  It does get big though and only flowers once in spring but it is absolutely gorgeous. (Image taken from googleimages)
