Beginner tree planting question

dilbydilby Posts: 78
Hi all. I’m sure this is an obvious question but I was hoping some people could help. I am planting a snow queen Silverbirch and can see what I think is root ball. I remember watching something on gardeners world once where monty said to nevr bury these, but I my case the roots are just below it so if I kept it out of the soil some roots would be on the surface. Should I bury the root ball or have I got it all wrong? Thanks so much for your patience!

Monty usually says plant it in the ground at the same level it was in its pot .If you think it’s not deep enough or it’s going to rock in the wind you can plant it deeper and stake it into the wind .I think it’s more important not to cover graft points such as on roses or fruit trees ,as far as I know .

Thanks so much, that's helpful. I've done that as soon as I saw your reply. The leaves are showing signs of yellowing and shrivelling up, but hopefully that's just autumn kicking in. I guess I won't know until spring if it's worked or not!
