Dicentra division

I have been given a clump of dicentra roots/tubers. It’s about a foot square and I can just about tell which way up it’s supposed to go from little buds.
Mr Google says divide into 2 or 3. Is that right? Will every little tuber grow? Should it be divided into individual tubers?  If I did that I wouldn’t be certain which way up a lot of them would be.
They are going into a woodland area. thanks for any advice.

Yes - just chop with a spade or similar. You should get three if it's that size.
Pot up or plant, depending on what you want to do with them. They're very easy plants  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Ah ok. I was being greedy thinking each bit of tuber would make a plant.

Provided each piece of root has a bud, then it will grow. But plants this small need to grow on in pots before they can be used. Best to split clump into two or three. I would be careful, they can be brittle. Could separate and pot a couple of buds while you do this.

At a foot square I'd go for four pieces - chop it in half with a spade and then chop each piece in half.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

I did it earlier today and it fell nicely into 3 bits. Quite a few tubers fell off, they are brittle, but none had buds so I discarded them.  Thanks for the info.
