I'm still struggling to find bay boletes but masses of ceps in the spruce woodland behind the house. I've frozen my finds instead of drying this year, far to many for that. I have a new area to explore, hopefully this afternoon so fingers crossed I find some of the former.
Wow! I'd take the Ceps over Bay Bolete any day, excellent work!

The 400gram Cep I pictured above was found by my OH and I must say its the find of our lives so far. She's pregnant so I had to dutifully eat it all to myself. Life's hard.

I'm finding though as the season goes on, my last foray last Thurs, my finds were very maggoty so there was a lot of waste but I put it to good use by spreading it around the areas where there isn't any this year. I have about 3 kilos in the freezer which will save me having to buy farmed mushrooms this winter.

Yes, the maggots are sadly a feature of Ceps. If there's only a few small ones and I can't flick them away they tend to go in the pan  :D

Competition is hot in my small patch of woods so i doubt i'll ever reach 3kg in a season without broadening my foraging area.

I suspect there's not mushroom in your freezer for anything else now (*grabs coat*)

  • Has anyone eaten the Slippery Jack?
I'm always tempted as they are meant to be good eating, but their appearance puts me off.
I'm a bit of a coward, and only eat 4 or 5 species i am sure are ok.

I haven't eaten one @Balgay.Hill but I know where there was some last year so if they are there this year I might try one. I'll let you know what they are like or I might not if they aren't what I think they are . . . Just joking, I will try one but peel it first.

There are loads in a wood i often walk in. It's the slime that puts me off, even though i've read of ways to get rid of it.
I'll wait on your report to see if they are worth the hassle!  :D

Couldn't find any today in the spot where I found them last year but I go often so I'll keep my eyes open for them.

Another good day yesterday. I'm going to follow your lead @Uff and freeze these ones.

Hopefully I now have enough to see me through the stews and casseroles of winter time!

A word of warning, I found a Bitter Bolete yesterday. Thankfully it was quickly identified but it was sneakily growing in amongst the Ceps. Curiosity got the better of me so I had a little nibble and I can confirm that its truly one of the most bitter things I have ever tasted!!!

Well done. Flipping nora I'm not sure I'd have a nibble as I've heard tell that's they are pretty foul and the bitter taste lasts for hours.
I'm still struggling to id most of the boletes. I found 2 new to me ones yesterday and despite going through the books I'm still not certain. I'll put them on my fungi thread later, problem is I'm getting to be a ruddy nuisance asking what my finds are.
