Rose feeding query

AnniDAnniD Posts: 12,585
I have a rose "Gabriel Oak" that was an end of season bare root purchase from David Austin April 2020.
It was pretty weedy specimen from the start, and this year has only produced one flower. I have moved it to a less crowded position but to be honest l don't know whether to keep it or not.
Is it worth me giving another feed to the roots this late in the season? I like a challenge but is it taking up space that could be used for something else ?

Is it getting enough sunshine where it is .Yes it’s weedy but it’s quite healthy .Try growing it in a different place or in a deep pot next year and see how it goes I would .

I have just moved it into a more open, sunny position @bcpathome, so hopefully it will perk up now.
I will give it one more chance  :)
Do you think it's worth feeding now ?

I wouldn't bother with a granular rose feed but I am not an expert. I intend to give my roses another round of Tomorite if I can find time this week.🤯🤯🤯

My Gabriel Oak has been doing much better in a pot than it did in the ground btw
  • I suspect yours might have some red spider mite, from the leaf colour. That has been very bad in my garden this year and prevents the plant gaining vigour. Also, of course, bear in mind that roses are shrubs, not perennials. Many varieties will take upwards of three years to establish a good framework and regular flowering. IMHO the best varieties are often those that take longer to settle in--like 'Felicia', the Hybrid Musk. Don't judge it until three growing seasons have gone by. But I wouldn't keep moving it around, either  :)
  • I was visiting a National Trust property last week They had Gabriel Oak what a fantastic scent. Worth growing for that alone.

Thank you all for your advice. To be honest l think moving it was probably for the best.
The flower bed is undergoing a reduction in size and a lot of things have been taken out. This was one of only 2 roses to be moved though.
It was pretty overcrowded and the soil was dreadful through around 90% of the bed, so l'm hoping a more open position and improved soil will do the trick. Fingers crossed !
    Thanks again  :)

It does smell gorgeous. Its blooms are also non-droopy, last well in a vase and on the plant, and seem to shine in the sun.

    Hope OP's plant picks up🤞
