Purple Shrub ID's

Looking for purple shrubs for the garden, and saw these two locally.

This one always has this deep Burgundy colour. I think it has blossom in the Spring.

The one below looks almost the same colour as the one above in Spring, a deep burgundy, but at the moment it's very green looking. It has blossom in the Spring.

I don't see thorns in the picture but on the one I have in the garden here I would not be able to see the thorns from the distance the picture is taken either. I'm just guessing from the overall appearance of the leaves and branches which look similar to me.

I can see clearly in the second photo that there are no thorns but isn't that a different shrub? When I select the first photo to open in a separate tab and try to zoom in as you suggest the zoom doesn't improve the view much on my computer. I think you could be right about the one in the second photo.

    Happy gardening!

    Loropetalum?
  • I’ve seen purple beech hedging very similar to the first picture. Can’t quite see if the leaves are the same shape.

Any chance of knocking on the front door to see if the residents know, or asking if you can take a closer photo @KeenOnGreen ?

I have a fair few purple shrubs but am finding it easier to say what their not! I don’t think the first is Berberis as the leaves are too big, growth habit wrong, can’t see thorns either. Looks like a large shrub or pruned multi-stemmed tree so Hosta could be right re the prunus cirasefera - mine are leafless at the moment so I can’t compare, nor remember the leaf shape well enough.

Leaf-shape wise neither are saying to me loropetalum (smaller bush, more rounded leaves) or physocarpus (toothed leaves) or cotinus (also more rounded leaves) or lagerstroemia (my purple-leaved one has smaller leaves and reddish stems). There are some purple tinged weigelas and the second could be one, but that’s just a wild guess since I don’t have any.

Agree, closer photos would help with the first and an idea of blossom colour/form of both.
