Could anyone identify this please.

This was cut into a hedge, obviously pretty hardy, because it's right by the beach going from Eastbourne Harbour to Pevensey Bay. It's slightly prickly, with tiny tubular shaped deep cerise pink flowers.

    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    It looks rather like an escallonia of some sort - just a guess though

    Agree with escallonia. Quite often recommended as a shrub suitable for coastal planting.

    my guess is E. macrantha.
    do the crushed leaves smell slightly of pineapple?

    Hello Hosta, I didn't think to crush the leaves,it was pretty prickaly.
