Boston Fern/Nephrolepsis - is it dying?!

Hello,
I have just realised there are lots of brown leaves near the roots of my lovely Boston Fern - .... Is it too late to rescue it? And what can I do?!!
Many thanks in advance,
Siobhan

  • That doesn’t look too bad to me.  Using snips or scissors try to remove the brown leaves at the base to tidy the plant up. It’s difficult to tell from your photo but is the pot the right size for your fern?  If not, it may benefit from repotting and refreshing the compost. I assume that it’s still in the same location and that you haven’t altered your watering regime.

The fronds can turn brown and rot if the compost is too wet.  Although they like the humidity of a bathroom, good ventilation is also important so that it doesn’t get too wet. The symptoms of overwatering and underwatering are similar, just to confuse us!

No it’s not dying it’s stressed Find out what is wrong by asking yourself ,does it need new soil ,a larger pot ,feed ,more light ,less light ,something else .Once you work out what’s stressing it …………bobs your uncle .
  • Your fern's looking so lush compared to mine  :D Mine's got a lot more brown bits here and there, ever since I bought them.... I just pick out the brown bits from time to time, and the fern didn't die, though does look a bit untidy (mainly because it has too many stolons sticking out).

Big pot, plenty of light away from sun, no draught , plenty to drink but not standing in water.

  • Hi everyone,
WOW! Thank you all so much for all your tips! I really appreciate it! I will repot it in a larger pot as soon as I can and get new compost for it. Thanks again everyone!

I potted a small Boston Fern and wintered it outside in a summer kitchen

This summer I put it outside in the wildlife pond alongside a "dead" maidenhair fern.  They are on rocks but feet in the water.

They are both thriving - but then again, I live in a warmer climate, although you have had an extremely hot summer.

The maidenhead fern has come on a treat!!

A good hoeing is worth two waterings.
