Only one flower on my Hydrangea Macrophylla

Hi! Only one flower has appeared on my Hydrangea Macrophylla this year when last year it was full of them. I did slightly cut it back before it started flowering this year, could that be why only one flower has appeared this time?

Thank you 😊

Thank you! I did do it before any leaves appeared on the plant but yes you're probably right. Do you know if the flowers will come back next year if I leave it this time without pruning?

Should do .Just leave it alone and you could be lucky .
  • It is generally best just to leave these Hydrangeas.  They should not need much, if any, pruning when grown in a pot.  Leave the flower heads on over winter and in spring just cut back the dead flowers to the next leaf joint down the stem to tidy the plant up.  You might want to think about a bigger pot for this one and perhaps some soil-based compost. It looks healthy enough, though.

That's great! I'm still learning 😊 so I'll do that and hopefully it should be okay. Thank you for your help!

You’re welcome.Remember, the flowers come on the year before growth ,so if you trim or prune it you will spoil the flowers coming for next time .Hydrangeas don’t usually need a lot of pruning ,they naturally get larger and larger .You may need a bigger pot ( as has been said already) as it grows When you repot look for information as to how to do it .I always use an ericaceous potting compost mixed with garden soil but others have different ways that they use .Gardening is about taking advice but doing what is right for you I have found .

That's very helpful! thank you for your advice and I'll bear that in mind when I come to repot it. I have another Hydrangea of a different type in the ground so I expect that to also grow big too, so I shall use what I've learnt today in the future :)

The other things to consider, have you fed it, it will stop flowering without feed, and do you keep it well watered, Hydrangeas are thirsty plants.
I would also suggest that it needs a bigger pot.

How can you lie there and think of England

Also, consider the weather. None of my hydrangeas have flowered this year and even though in the shade, they looked hot and miserable. I know yours is in a pot so it will have been watered, but even so, the heat has been punishing.

I have fed it before yes, and it's been raining heavy everyday for a while here so I've not needed to water as regularly. The pot does look decieving on the photos, as I took it from above because it is quite a big pot. But of course I will repot if needed.
