Scabiosa

Afternoon,

Our local shop has some Scabiosa Mariposa Blue going cheap. The label says they are a perennial with a 5 year guarantee but I’ve read online they are biennial short lived.

Would anyone know which is more accurate?

 Thanks.

  • Have a look at
Seems to tell you both are true in someway.

  • I saw that but if it is biennial or short lived, I won’t spend my money! The label has one of those 5 year guarantee symbols on that are present on the rhs website.

So I’m still none the wiser!

I've had some of the small blue ones in my garden for about 4 years now. They get to about 8". My soil isn't ideal for them being a bit acidic, but they do ok.

I've also bought 3 (end of season sale) this year that are labelled perennial. They're the taller variety. I've got one in a pot and the other 2 in the garden.
I think they're usually considered short-lived perennials so they last a 'few' years.

  • Thanks, they’re only £4 so might give them a try!

    Same £ as mine.
If they grow ok you can divide them and take basal cuttings in the spring when they're big enough, so if the older plant dies you've got younger ones to replace it with.
