Over-wintering hardy fuchsia in their first year.

I have planted 2 hardy fuchsias into ceramic pots this year.  Obviously I shall soon need to consider the winter months.  Ought I to leave them outside in a sheltered spot or put them in the garden shed?  If they go into the shed, will I need to water them a bit throughout the winter?  I have a large plastic cloche I could use, if necessary, if they stay outside. Thanks.

If they're hardy ones, they'll be fine outside. Unless they're only tiny plants, and you're in a cold part of the country [and by that, I mean much further north than me]  in which case you could tuck them into a sheltered spot.
Certainly don't put them in a shed  :)

  • Thanks. No, I'm in Kent.  The plants have done well and are quite big as I put them in very large pots.  I can put them behind the shed where there is a high fence alongside so they will be sheltered from any winds or substantial snow/frosts (snow is probably unlikely!)
  • I bought some cheap fuchsias in Lidl this summer and they've done very well, had a another spurge this week with the rain too. They are in pots. I'm thinking they're probably just annuals, but perhaps they might last the winter if I put them in a sheltered spot too? They are such lovely colours I'd really like to keep them going for next year. Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks.

If they'll be sheltered from the rain too, you might need to give them a little water now and again so that they don't dry out completely.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Snow isn't really a problem for most plants @JenKent, apart from when it's heavy and breaks branches or similar. It's the wet cold, then freezing/thawing that does most damage.
Snow insulates, and in smaller amounts [ie -less than three or four inches]  does no damage.  :)

I'd leave them out but keep them sheltered from cold winds.

I'm in Kent and I've left hardy fuchsias out in pots for the last 2 winters with no problem. They're in a relatively sheltered spot but I haven't done anything to protect them.
