It's Spartina @Plantminded . I have it in a bottomless pot as I didn't want it to spread too much, and the path is behind it. It's not invasive though. I've grown it directly in the ground in another garden no problem.
It's particularly useful as it's a coastal grass, and will cope with sitting in excess water, and also with drought, so it might be ideal for you.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you @Fairygirl, it looks great in that location!
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I killed off my grass with glyphosate, and then just dug it over before planting. You would need the grass to be green and growing for this to work though!

  • Thank you @Loxley, another option to consider!

  • Dig holes where you want to plant and plant with choice of plants and then cover the rest of the lawn with cardboard, making sure to remove all plastic (sellotape etc).  Put a layer of cardboard down thoroughly wetting it then another layer of cardboard wetting that as well and then cover with mulch.  The cardboard will stop the grass growing and rot down.
