Advice/recommendations

Hi all, looking for some advice of what to plant behind my hydrangea and in front of the climbing honeysuckle. It’s north facing but does get a bit of sun up until around late morning. Looking for something that will be higher than the hydrangea and offer some colour to contrast with the white mops. Many thanks in advance!

  • @hjlamb2015l6ga62mj It is difficult to see how much space you have behind the Hydranga can you actually squeeze something else in? I think you will have lots of roots there.

You’ll need to find something that will grow to at least 6’ tall,  hydrangeas are very large shrubs.
    I don’t think there’s room.

I agree with Lyn, there isn't enough room for both the honeysuckle and the hydrangea, let alone anything else.

  • @hjlamb2015l6ga62mj Honeysuckle and Hydranga both need moisture at the roots, another plant will give too much competition. In time you may find that as the roots get bigger these two plants will fight for moisture. They will certainly fill the space.

I think the honeysuckle's already struggling, and that's most likely down to lack of moisture, as it's right up against the wall and therefore in a rain shadow, as well as competing with the hydrangea. The root systems will be pretty well mixed together too, looking at the photo.
I'd agree with the others who say there's not enough room for anything to grow to any size successfully in there.

I agree, there's no space for anything much. Maybe something short-term like foxgloves or opium poppies while the hydrangea is small? You could sprinkle a bit of seed and if the space is suitable, they'll grow.

If you give the honeysuckle a lot more water throughout the year (from early March to end Sept 3 buckets full a week minimum) it should produce foliage and flowers lower down and you won’t need anything between it and the hydrangea.
