Deep shade baskets

Hi all, I'm new to gardening and would like hanging baskets, but my garden is north facing and the back wall doesn't recieve any direct sunlight. My question is: which plants do well in a basket with no sun? I've had a look online and get a lot of contradicting answers so I'm a little lost. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance.

    For summer, or longer-term?
For summer bedding, fibrous-rooted begonias are OK in shade. Winter pansies/violas might be OK but they usually start to do better in spring for me.
For foliage smaller ferns might work but I'm no expert on those. Small-leaved ivies will make good evergreen foliage in shade.

In my dark side return begonias and fuchsias did well.
  • Thank you both, sorry I don't know how/if I can reply individually. I will look at buying those that you've suggested and see which works best for me. Really looking forward to having something there now, thanks again  :) it's really appreciated.

Don't worry about replying individually :). Garden centres etc have winter bedding stuff, pansies etc, in now so maybe have a look and see whether there's anything you like the look of.

Impatiens (busy-lizzies) flower well for me in a north facing position. I've not tried them in a hanging basket but a friend of mine does and they look very nice. They do need regular watering though.

Edited to add: violas have done well for me too, though they don't look good into winter here (Cumbria). I often have violas in spring followed by impatiens until the frosts.
  • Thank you, I'll look at those too. I might need to think about bigger baskets now with these suggestions  :)

I've used these types of begonia in window boxes and baskets in deep shade and they really lit up the alley. The tubers go on for years if you overwinter the basket/box somewhere dry.

This one is possibly one of the 'Pendula' range.

This is Santa Barbara. About as easy a plant as there is, and hoverflies really like it (!)

  • I like the look of those, I'll check them out. Thank you.
