    I have eryngiums with leaves that look a lot like that. They die back completely in the winter and the new growth comes from ground level. They have a thick tap root, so if that's what you pulled out, it might have germinated without you noticing!
    Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

    That plant has grown back so hopefully will get flowers for a proper ID.

    That ties in with it possibly being eryngium. It's the right time for them to be reappearing.

    Will be interesting to see if it ever flowers. It's north facing so not full sun where it is, though the fairy rose has been there for a few years and flowers ok.

    Hi so if this is eryngium should I replant it elsewhere? Seems to be outcompeting the fairy rose. When is best time or should I remove and plant the rose elsewhere?
