I received an order from Ballyrobert earlier in the year.
One of the plants I ordered was persicaria bistorta superba.
When the box arrived, due to bad handling by the courier the pot marked persicaria was smashed and I just found a cream-coloured golf ball sized bulb rolling around with a few tiny leaves on the top.
I duly potted it up and kept it in my cold frame.
It's not grown much since and after confirmation from others on this forum I was advised that persicaria does not have a bulb. So it's not as marked.
I sent a photo to Ballyrobert and they confirmed its not persicaria and sent me another.
They also said they had no idea what they may have sent.
So I'm pleased that they sent a new plant that looks very different.

But what is the mystery plant they sent that has grown from this bulb?

It may have had a lumpy root but no bulb has leaves like that.
It's not in a very good condition for ID, maybe when it grows some new leaves it will be clearer

@Pete.8  Agree with @nutcutlet not a bulb. As to what it is not really sure. I don't think it is a Persicaria the stems would be the give away. Campanula? Evening Primrose?

  • Mmm ... just wondering if it could be bistort (Persicaria)? 🙂

Thanks all I appreciate your input.
I guess it's a matter of wait and see.
I agree the leaves do look rather persicaria-ish.
Maybe it's a persicaria that was mislabelled.
It's barely grown in the 5 months I've had it.
As for the bulb/root/corm - I don't know, it was hard and round and creamy coloured from what I recall.
The replacement they sent definitely looks right though - even though it took 8 days to arrive - Royal Mail - not Ballyroberts fault

  • I would try to look at the stems they will be very much the same. The second plant is correct.

Yes @GardenerSuze the stems do look similar.
I'll look forward to hopefully seeing some flowers of some sort next year, coz I hope it's not grown for its foliage :)

  • @Pete.8 I love a mystery. The leaves of Persicaria vary alot and some such as P Red Dragon have better leaves than flowers in my opinion. Other are grown for their flowers which are better than the leaves and yours is one of those.
