Problem Corner

Hi, I've just had this big Laurel cut down and I'm not sure what to do now. I chopped the Lilac down before because it had outgrown its space ( neglect on my part I've been ignoring this corner for years ) and it is now sprouting. The area is south facing and now gets some sun but the soil is very compacted and dry. Further along is the Rhododendron and then a Sambucus ( with purple leaves), the soil is better there and has a few hardy geraniums growing but with the added problem of the giant tree in the neighbours garden over shadowing everything. I did have some overhanging branches cut back but they are growing back. Back to the corner in question ( sorry I'm rambling haha) I have got some log roll to put between soil and path ( which also needs more gravel) and am just going to throw some bark down for now but what would you do. I've been told the neighbours tree is a type of Willow.. Thanks(

Geranium macrorhizum and Epimedium are growing o.k. despite the drought. May be worth trying
  • The soil will be completely spent and in need of some added compost before you plant anything.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
