Hanging baskets

Hello,
I have 3 baskets that attach to the wall and now need to be relined, thanks to the birds using the coir to make their nests. I don't want to use coir again and can't seem to find the compacted cardboard? liners. They are unfortunately oblong so liners not ready available. I wondered if anyone had used something entirely different like and old rug or towel to line the outside and then  put a plastic liner inside that and if s how well did it do?
Thanks

I knitted some liners for round baskets and half-round wall baskets in Spring 2020 when non-essential shops were shut due to COVID and they're still in use (with plastic cut from empty compost bags inside) although they look pretty mucky now. Natural fibres like wool or cotton will rot eventually though. Mine are from cheap acrylic knitting wool/yarn that I had in the house at the time. My dad once cut up an old fleece jacket that he'd put the elbows out of and used it to line baskets. I'm sure you'll find something suitable.

I had a small piece of foam underlay left over from carpet fitting and used that quite successfully for 2-3 years before it perished.  It had been in the garage for years, you know in case it came in useful😁

    Typo. And it did …….obviously
  • Hessian works well with a liner of plastic from old compost bags.

  • Thank yu. I will scout around and see what I have and if not a trip to a charity shop. The coir i will leave out for the birds next spring, since they have had most of it anyway!
  • Had the same problem here.... blackbirds. We used the old compost bags, black side outside of that makes sense

Woolly jumpers or delivery wool or anything similar is fine. Or towelling, yes.
