Verbena Bampton. A few questions

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
I grew this in a container with a purple petunia. Very nice.
It's finished flowering now. There are seed heads all the way up the stems but all but the top ones are empty. Did something eat them or did they blow away?
Anyway. I really liked it and would like some more .  Do I save the unripe seeds or divide it? Will it survive a mildish winter in a sheltered spot?
If it's self seeded, how can I distinguish seedlings from VB which grows like a weed here?
I think intervention might be necessary but I'm not sure what to do.

The seeds are small - they probably blew away and will pop up all over the place next spring - that's what mine do. They particularly seem to like the edges of borders near the paving, and cracks in paving. I sometimes lift and pot up clumps of seedlings if they're reasonably accessible. The seedlings have a distinct purple tinge that V. bon. seedlings don't have.
If you want to save some seed to sow next spring, maybe fasten a paper bag or something over some spent flowers to catch the seed when it's ripe. I don't think it would be any good if collected too soon.

They'll have to fight the VB for the cracks then! Thanks for the tip about the colour @JennyJ
