What's eating my cucumbers

I noticed one small cucumber with a number of round holes in it, I removed it from the plant and split I open, it was hollowed away inside and no sign of a culprit.  Another cucumber now has a couple of holes, any idea what is doing this?

Snails?  Slugs?  Birds?  Looks like a delicious healthy cuke!!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • Not sure... the cucumber I removed earlier had about 6 almost perfectly round holes, inside of cucumber almost all gone, should have mentioned they are in a greenhouse Rochdale uk

With the rasping on the skin I would have said slugs, but I have never seen them hollowed out like that before. 😱

I occasionally get a bit of slug/snail damage to cucumbers in my g/house, but it's just the outer dark green skin that shows they've visited.
I've never seen damage like you have before.

  • Not had that on cucumbers ( GH and outside ) but have similar holes in Peppers - no identifiable culprit found yet. Cut open, the seeds have blackened around that area and sometimes the surrounding skin is soft  and brown but that's all  :/
  • I'd guess at a slug or a beetle. Put a beer trap down and see what you catch.

I’m wondering about the Tomato moth caterpillar … it feeds on other plants … not just Toms. 🤔

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions, in the end I think it was slug damage, I have grown cucumbers for a few years but never had round holes and hollowed out cucumbers before, but after a few night time sorties with a torch I seem to have removed the problem.  Thanks again everyone

I find holes and hollowing out like that on strawberries. As I often find woodlice in the hollowed out berries I assume that the slugs make the holes and the woodlice take advantage. It could be something similar on your cucumbers.
