Minibeast ID, please?

I found this on a leaf at the edge of the pond today. Any thoughts on identity, please?

Difficult to tell, if it’s a big beast it could be an Elephant hawk moth,  but I’m not good at identifying chrysalis.
@wild edges is expert on this.

  • Thanks, @Lyn, I should have added ... it measures approximately 2cms. 🙂

Small one then,  probably with our luck it’s a cabbage white 😀

  • It looks like it is almost ready to emerge ... I have put it back on the leaf and am hoping it doesn't get eaten before it has a chance to fly off. I don't think it is a cabbage white but it looks very interesting, whatever it is.

I've no idea so I fed it into the iNaturalist AI system and got this https://uk.inaturalist.org/taxa/56558-Notonecta-maculata
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Well done!  That’s why it’s near the pond.

  • That's fascinating ... thank you @wild edges - we have hundreds, if not thousands of those in the pond; I didn't make the connection!
